OBJECTIVE To investigate the association between team trust and performance among the surgical personnel of a university and a general hospital.
METHOD The study was conducted with the perioperative teams of the surgical departments of the University General Hospital and the "Venizeleion-Pananeion" General Hospital, in Heraklion, Crete. The "TRUST" instrument was used with the permission of the designers, following translation into Greek and cultural adaptation. Statistical analysis was conducted with the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS), version 21.0 (a=0.05). After testing for normality, the following tests were performed: Kruskal-Walis, Fisher's exact test, Spearman r and binary logistic regression.
RESULTS The Greek version of the "TRUST" questionnaire presented high internalexternal reliability and consistency (Cronbach's α=0.82). The reported levels of trust among the perioperative team members differed significantly between the two hospitals (p=0.02). The same difference was observed for performance levels (p=0.04). According to the results, team trust exerted a positive effect on the level of performance in both hospitals (medium positive correlation: Spearman r=0.65, p<0.001 and Spearman r=0.55, p=0.02). The highest levels of trust and performance were scored for nurses by all team members in both hospitals (trust: mean=3.8 and 3.8, respectively; performance: mean=3.4 and 3.5, respectively).
CONCLUSION A need for the introduction of measures directed towards the improvement of interprofessional cooperation is indicated by the only moderate levels of trust and performance observed in this study.
