Post-operative hematoma in thyroid cancer is potentially fatal, due to airway obstruction, which it can cause. The case is reported here of a 64-year-old woman who underwent left lobectomy for thyroid cancer. In hours following surgery, a postoperative hematoma developed in the area of the cervical surgery and it was considered necessary to re-operate. The hematoma was evacuated by releasing the sutures (clips), so that there was no risk of airway obstruction. Thyroid hematoma is life-threatening and requires knowledge and timely recognition to ensure prompt management.

Key words: Hematoma, Postoperative complication, Thyroid cancer.
