Surgery to create an intestinal stoma is the most commonly performed life-saving operation. Two main types of stomas are created, intestinal stomas, with resection of the large intestine or ileum in the abdominal area, and urinary stomas. The most common complications that are usually treated conservatively, include bleeding, mucosal separation, retraction, chemical dermatitis due to leakage, allergic dermatitis, pseudoverrucous epitheliomatous hyperplasia, folliculitis, fungal infection, peristomal psoriasis and gangrenosum pyoderma; prolapse, hernia, stenosis and necrosis are complications that are treated surgically. The perioperative education and support of the patients is provided by the specialized ostomy nurse. Τhe process of preoperative stoma marking is an important intervention in the context of a comprehensive patient care and education program, and it has been observed to be associated with a reduction in complications, lowering of the level of postoperative stress and improvement in the health and quality of life of the patient with a stoma.

Key words: Intestinal stomas, Perioperative education, Preoperative stoma marking, Stoma complications, Urinary stomas.
