This paper discusses and critically evaluates the importance of communication in medical education. Empirical evidence supporting the relationship of communication with medical outcomes is reviewed. In addition the paper outlines the principles of communication and introduces the basic communication skills required for medical practice and concludes with practical recommendations concerning the integration of communication skills training into the medical curriculum.
